August

Well, its August. Its the time of year for ball players when the season is winding down and seemingly any ache or pain from injuries past and present are most certainly making themselves felt in the present. I am not an every day player and I have some aches and pains, those guys like Jiwan and Valle that play every single day are certainly feeling it much worse. Its the time of the year when the training room is much busier than normal, the ice and heat tubs are loaded with players before and after games and the weight room that was once crowded at the beginning of the year isn't nearly as popular of a place as it once was in the beginning of the season. It is the last leg of the marathon and this is the time of year when the mental part of the game seemingly plays an even bigger role in every day.

This is the furthest I have gone in a season in my professional career so far because my injury shortened last year for me, so its slightly uncharted territory for me. It is a particularly exciting time of the year for us on many accounts. Playoff races are coming down to the wire, thoughts of finally returning home and seeing your loved ones are becoming ever more tangible, closer to becoming a reality with each passing day. It's the time of the year when things get real goofy in the clubhouse, guys have been playing with each other through 120+ games, so the hair has been let down, everyone is comfortable with each other and probably slightly loosing their minds from the every day repetitions of the job which makes for a really fun time in the clubhouse and in the dugout every day.

We are 3 games back from first place at the moment with our last 3 games of the year against the current first place team, the Blue Jays. If you are following the Threshers, those 3 games are certainly marked on your calendar as must watch games assuming the race continues to stay close to the end.

It is about time for me and the roommates to head to the field to take another "step" towards the finish line. The countdown to the end of the season has begun and there is a lot left to take care of, in the training room, in the weight room and most importantly on the field, before we reach our finish line.

  1. Yes, I think your description of this time as the ending of a marathon is pretty accurate. A baseball season is pretty long and when you add the mental preparation time before spring training even begins plus that month of getting ready for the opening day game it makes it even longer. Your families shares your desire for the time of reunification with you players too!
